What a domain check is
A domain is either registered by someone or it is not, and unlike a business name there is no judgement call in it. That makes domains the fastest of the four checks and the one you can act on immediately.
We answer from our own index of registered domains first, which is why results appear as you type, and then a live DNS pass corrects anything the index had wrong. What you end up looking at has been checked twice by two different methods.

The two directions are not equally certain, and it would be easy to hide that. We would rather say it.
Available is the solid one
Our index cannot produce a false "available". If a domain is not in it, it genuinely was not in the zone data we hold. The only way this is wrong is if the domain was registered very recently, which is exactly what the live DNS pass is there to catch.
Taken is very strong, not perfect
The index trades a tiny error rate for speed, so roughly one in a thousand "taken" answers can be a false alarm. The live DNS pass corrects those too, which is why the second pass runs on every search rather than on request.
Not checked stays not checked
If neither pass could settle an extension we leave it unresolved rather than rounding it to available. An unresolved row is never a hint.

Membership in our own index is a lookup rather than a network round trip, which is what makes thirty simultaneous extensions feel immediate instead of feeling like thirty requests.
Because the index is a copy, a very recent registration can still be missing from it. That is the gap the live DNS pass closes, and it is why we run it on every search rather than offering it as an extra.

How many extensions do you check?
Thirty, on every search, in one batch. The list is fixed and covers the common generic extensions rather than country domains.
How can results be instant?
We hold our own index of registered domains, so the first answer is a lookup in our own data rather than a request to anyone else. A live DNS pass then runs behind it.
What does the DNS pass actually check?
Whether the domain has nameservers, by asking public DNS resolvers directly. A domain with nameservers is in use; one that does not resolve at all is very likely free. It is a check of delegation rather than of a registrar record.
How accurate is an available result?
Our index cannot invent an available result, so if a domain is not in it, it genuinely was not there. The realistic risk is a very recent registration, which the live DNS pass is there to catch.
How accurate is a taken result?
Very strong but not perfect. The index accepts a small false-alarm rate in exchange for speed, on the order of one in a thousand, and the live DNS pass corrects those.
What does "Not checked" mean on a row?
That neither pass settled that extension. We leave it unresolved rather than rounding it to available, because an unresolved row that reads as good news is the worst thing this tool could do.
Do you sell domains?
No. We are not a registrar, we never mark up or resell, and we have nothing to gain from telling you a name is taken. Register wherever you prefer.

Does an available domain mean the name is safe to use?
No. A free domain says nothing about state business registrations or federal trademarks. Those are separate systems and this tool checks them separately.
Why not just search at a registrar?
You can, and you will have to eventually to register. The difference is that a registrar is selling you something and we are not, and that we show thirty extensions at once next to your other three checks.
